Soybeans are now more plentiful than ever before. This is due to the widespread crop production in the last two decades. Soybean production is the country’s richest crop. It has outpaced all other expansions in agriculture in recent times. Soybeans are an excellent crop to grow and the recent rise in sales is a pleasant surprise.
There are a variety of distinctions between soybeans and seed corn that you need to be aware of. The most important difference for your garden is that growing edamame requires slightly more attention than any other bean. The edamame beans in the lower left are often young soybeans that are still in their seed stage.
These green beans are high in moisture and are green beans. They aren’t finished turning yet, so they are in a very tender state. The yellowed, green pods on the right are beginning to dry out too. They’re still sufficiently warm to be harvested however, they are maturing much faster than the green seeds.
Soybeans are not a fan of being planted in soils that have been highly depleted of nitrogen. If you are looking for high-quality beans, then you will prefer not to plant them in soils that are depleted of nitrogen. Soy beans also are sensitive to low temperatures. Sowing and harvesting beans on cool days when temperatures at night are below 40 degrees is recommended.
Once you have your plants established, you can begin planting. Soybeans have a short root, which makes them great for rapid growth in an area in which the soil isn’t well-draining. Because of their small roots they should not be planted in large numbers. And if the seedlings are planted too close together the plants could get spider webbed, or “root root rot”. This can seriously impact the crop yield.
It is recommended to split your edamame plants that are growing (green and yellow) in intervals of five to six inches. This will give each group of plants enough space to spread out and minimize the chance of root rot. The roots of soy plants should be tied up tightly using wire or burlap prior to the time you plant them. This will prevent the plants from spreading too far after they have been planted.
Soybeans typically produce between six and twelve bags per acre. That means that a single plant will produce around forty bags. If you have multiple plants growing together, then you can produce approximately seventy-two bags. The standard number of bags per plant is three feet. If you don’t have the space in your garden to grow three feet tall edamame, then the next best option is to plant one to two feet tall soybeans. These will still be high-quality beans. Three feet tall is a nice compromise between too small a space and a too large space for the tall three-foot edamame plants you require.
Your soybeans will continue to grow until they are harvested. After harvesting is completed, remove the edamame pods off the plants and put them in a sealed container. It is recommended to seal them so that no air can pass through. Next, store the bags in cool dry places. This will extend the life of your soybeans, and also save money over the long-term.
If you are planning to cook your beans, you can roast the edamame seeds as you would with your black or yellow beans. You will need to remove the seeds from the pods, then cut off a portion of the pod. After the pod has been cut, you can put the seed in the middle of a tortilla and cook it. You can also add the edamame seed to the baked potatoes and heat them.

Tofu and edamame, however, are not the only items you can make using soybeans. In fact you can cook nearly everything on a piece of soybeans. For instance, you could make a delicious smoothie using yogurt and edamame along with other fruits like bananas or berries. You can make a delicious cereal out of ground beans and rice that has been flavored. The possibilities are really endless when you can enjoy soybeans in a variety of different ways.
